UNC will support Anti-Gang Law if the Government consents to scrutiny…
The Government must come clean with the population and tell us why they are unwilling to compromise on the timing for scrutiny, are they afraid to report the nation before a General Election?

Trinidad and Tobago is a nation in crisis and unfortunately finds itself governed by the most incompetent and clueless government in the history of the country. The Keith Rowley administration continues to play politics with crime. They have thus far only attempted to provide legislative prescriptions to a wider and continually festering problem crime problem.
After citizens looked on in shock as roads were blocked in the capital and chaos and violence erupted on Monday 19thFebruary, 2017, the talking heads of the Government chose to use this incident and the protests in East Port of Spain to renew the calls for Anti- Gang legislation.
“The Government continues to be disingenuous in their statements on the Anti-Gang legislation,” PRO for the UNC Anita Haynes noted in a statement today, “the Opposition remains prepared to pass the Anti-Gang legislation and in fact our legal minds have provided suggestions to strengthen the amended draft Bill presented to us by the Attorney General.”
“One sticking point remains the Government’s unwillingness to budge on the length of time for the Sunset Clause, and so subject the law and its actions to further review in 24 months,” Haynes noted. “It remains the position of the United National Congress that increases in power much be checked and measured with increasing scrutiny, it is the only way to ensure the rights of citizens are protected.”
The other issue on which the UNC is adamant is the need for wider consultation on the draft Bill, and to get feedback from stakeholders, namely the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), on the measures contained in the legislation. The DPP would be responsible ensuring that this legislation can be effective and therefore we would like to hear from the Office if it is indeed workable in its present form.

The Keith Rowley administration remains incapable of acting in the best interest of the people of Trinidad and Tobago and being honest and forthright with the population. The narrative that the Opposition does not want to pass the Anti-Gang legislation remains a boldfaced lie. The real question is why is this administration so afraid of scrutiny?
