Dr Slinger Francisco the Mighty Sparrow also affectionately referred to as “Birdie” was one of the Greats’. The last time I interviewed him, he referred to himself as ‘The Bird with The Word’.
He surely would be missed by many people who knew him and loved his music.
But what stands out to me the most was when he surrendered his life to God, accepted Jesus and got baptized as a practicing Seventh Day Adventist.
My deepest sympathy goes out to all his family. And to his children who I was privileged to spend intimate time with.

THE MIGHTY SPARROW:
Dr Slinger Francisco was born in the fishing village of Grand Roy, Grenada, West Indies, on 9 July 1935. He moved to Trinidad as a one-year-old with his mother.
He died on Sunday September 27th, 2026, at the age of 91 years old at his Queens, NY home.
A statement issued by one of his daughter’s Karen Francisco on Sunday afternoon said the calypsonian died peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brief illness.
He recorded over 500 songs and released 70 albums.
Although, the mighty Sparrow is now dead. Rumors have it that he was dead at least three times before. I believe that the song Sparrow Dead was originally recorded in 1972 in jest of his first rumored death.
