King Charles bids farewell as his 4-day U.S. state visit comes to an end — full coverage.
The king is now on his way to Bermuda to make his first visit as monarch to the British territory.
King Charles III boarded his plane on Thursday at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, concluding his and Queen Camilla’s four-day state visit to the U.S.
Charles’s overseas tour, however, hasn’t ended just yet. He is set to visit Bermuda, a British territory, without Camilla before returning to the U.K.
President Trump and first lady Melania Trump bid a formal farewell to Charles and Camilla at the White House this morning, before they traveled to Virginia for their final engagements. Charles’s tour wrapped up with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery to honor fallen soldiers, a parade and block party in Front Royal, Va., and a meeting with Indigenous leaders at Shenandoah National Park.
The royals spent Wednesday in the Big Apple, capping it off with the King’s Trust Gala near Rockefeller Center in Manhattan.
A host of celebrities were in attendance, including Lionel Richie, Anna Wintour, Martha Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker, Stella McCartney and Leo Woodall.
The gala followed a series of events on the third day of the royals’ state visit, which included a visit to the 9/11 Memorial at One World Trade Center.
The king spent Tuesday in Washington, D.C., where he attended a private bilateral meeting with Trump and gave an address to a joint session of Congress.
Despite tense relations between the U.S. and U.K. over the Iran war, Charles’s visit has been a largely amicable affair, with the two leaders repeatedly emphasizing the importance of the “special relationship” between their nations — and occasionally cracking Jokes about less pleasant incidents in the distant past.
King Charles III has departed the U.S. from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and is continuing his overseas tour with his first visit as monarch to Bermuda, a British territory.
Queen Camilla will meanwhile travel back to the U.K.
