Jumaane Supporting The AG’s Lawsuit Against The NYPD
I’ve long said that we need to reimagine public safety in New York City. Systemic change cannot wait a moment longer.
Two weeks ago, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against the NYPD and its leadership to end its pattern of using excessive force and making false arrests against New Yorkers during nonviolent protests.
The NYPD’s consistent lack of accountability for bad actors was on full display in their excessive response to nonviolent Black Lives Matter protesters last year. And I’ll be very frank, it’s time for Mayor de Blasio’s office to live up to campaign promises and stop ignoring this systemic problem we face.
New Yorkers demand and deserve accountability and transparency from those who hold positions of power.
I want to thank the Attorney General for using the tools she has in bringing a lawsuit against the NYPD and make sure that Mayor de Blasio does not choose his usual path of inaction.
I’ve proudly marched alongside so many of you in response to a seemingly endless list of deaths and excessive force on black bodies at the hands of law enforcement nationally.
This is in full contrast to the response given to armed white supremacists who attempted an insurrection and the Capitol this month.
The Attorney General is suing the NYPD for egregious and illegal use of force, unlawful detention, and the inflammatory practice of kettling.
And it comes as no surprise that communities of more color got the worst of it. We all have a right to nonviolently protest, without excessive, and unlawful force from those whose duty is to protect us.
Attorney General James took another step in suing the NYPD and de Blasio’s administration – now we need your support.
