HOUSTON, USA — A final legal effort by R Allen Stanford to overturn what is effectively a life sentence, for operating his Antigua-based Stanford International Bank, a massive Ponzi scheme that stole the life savings from many victims in the United States and elsewhere, has ended in failure after the US Supreme Court again declined to hear his appeal.
The US Supreme Court denied his petition for a writ of certiorari on November 28, 2016, but Stanford filed a subsequent petition for rehearing on December 23. The high court denied rehearing on Monday.
Stanford’s only available legal remedies left, now that he has exhausted his right of appeal, and right to petition for certiorari, are post-conviction prisoner petitions, which are discretionary with the court and generally have a very small chance of success.
Stanford, who is 66 years old, is scheduled to be released from federal prison on April 17, 2105, 88 years from now, when he would be 154 years old.
