Official Opening of The Arima General Hospital

Thousands of citizens who reside in East Trinidad can now access first-class health care as Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley officially opened the long-awaited, state of the art, Arima General Hospital today (Tuesday 9th June, 2020).

Located in the heart of Arima, this facility will serve as the primary inpatient health care facility in the Borough of Arima and its environs including D’Abadie, La Horquetta, Malabar and Arouca. The hospital will also offer Ambulatory care, Accident and Emergency, Pharmacy/Dispensary, Laboratory/Blood Bank and Mortuary Services.

Its 150 beds will be dedicated to a wide range of medical services including Radiology, Physiotherapy, Psychiatry, Orthopaedics/Burns, Optical, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Surgery. The facility is also outfitted with all relevant medical equipment, furniture, security systems, data and wireless networking along with a Central Energy Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In his feature address, Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley said the delivery of this project is in keeping with the Government’s mandate to provide quality healthcare for all citizens across the country.

Executed under a Government to Government arrangement between Trinidad and Tobago and the Peoples Republic of China, the project was completed for an estimated $200 million less than was budgeted under the previous administration.

At the peak of construction, the Arima General Hospital Project generated direct employment on a daily basis of over 350 persons, with a minimum local content component of 50 per cent.

Now that it is complete, over 450 persons will be required to service the 150-bed hospital – inclusive of medical and nursing practitioners and administrative staff.

Dr Rowley was joined by Minister of Health, the Hon Terrence Deyalsingh, Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Arima, the Hon Anthony Garcia, Mayor of Arima, Her Worship Lisa Morris-Julian and His Excellency Song Yumin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, at today’s event.
